There is hardly any other explanation for the fact that the scandal-ridden ambassador Fate Velaj, who has already made headlines several times, can continue to operate unchallenged in Austria. Despite an official verbal note expressly prohibiting him from conducting business as ambassador, Velaj appears to be continuing his activities undeterred. The former painter from Albania not only continues to sell books and paintings in Vienna, but also makes public appearances – for example, at readings and vernissages that have been taking place across Austria since September 23.
Violations of diplomatic regulations?
This raises a crucial question: How exactly are these sales handled—and where, or if at all, are they declared for tax purposes? As an official representative of a foreign state, Velaj should, strictly speaking, refrain from private business activities. The fact that he nevertheless actively appears as an artist and author highlights possible violations of the rules—and the apparent inaction of the Austrian Foreign Ministry.
Meinl-Reisinger under pressure?
Particularly controversial: NEOS leader Beate Meinl-Reisinger is also increasingly being confronted with critical questions. Why does she remain conspicuously silent, despite growing public criticism? Is it political consideration, a lack of information, or even external pressure?
Why is the Albanian foreign minister not taking action either?
The Albanian Minister for European Affairs and Foreign Relations, Elisa Spiropali, took office in September 2025. Although Velaj officially acts as Albanian ambassador to Austria, Spiropali has not yet announced or initiated any public measures against him. Observers attribute this to the fact that, given Albania’s political priorities—in particular the EU accession process—the issue could be considered a domestic political problem that should not be dealt with publicly in order to avoid straining diplomatic relations.
Some observers are already speculating about the influence of mafia structures from the Balkan region, which have been active in Vienna for years. This is a disturbing thought, but in view of the continued passivity of the authorities and political restraint, it no longer seems entirely implausible.
Application to revoke Velaj’s university degree
Together with renowned plagiarism researcher Dr. Stefan Weber, an application is currently being prepared to revoke Fate Velaj’s bachelor’s thesis at the University of Applied Arts. Dr. Weber has already subjected the thesis to a thorough analysis – with devastating results. As part of this application, the admission requirements will also be reviewed, in particular a university degree that may have been purchased at the controversial Kristal University in Tirana. If the application for revocation is successful, applications for revocation will also be submitted to the Federal Chancellery on the grounds of false premises for Fate Velaj’s “Golden Medal of Merit” and his “professor title.” Further details will follow shortly.
