Albania begins Construction of new railway stations to modernize national transport

Albania has officially begun construction on a series of new railway stations along the Tirana-Durres corridor and a newly planned rail link to Tirana International Airport.

The initiative marks a major step in the country’s efforts to modernize its transportation network and improve regional connectivity.

The project, led by Austrian construction firm Strabag and supervised by Greece’s Obermeyer, includes the development of stations along a 34-kilometre route connecting the capital with Durres, as well as a 5.7-kilometre extension linking the city to its main airport.

The Ministry of Infrastructure has confirmed that full track upgrades will be completed by the end of 2025, with electrification and the deployment of modern trains scheduled for 2026. These measures are expected to improve energy efficiency, reduce environmental impact, and bring Albania’s rail infrastructure closer to European Union standards.

€92 Million Project Funded by EU and EBRD

The total cost of the project stands at €92.1 million, financed through a combination of public and international funds. The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) is providing a €36.9 million loan, while the European Union is contributing up to €35.5 million in grants. The remainder is covered by the Albanian government.

Once completed, the new system will feature nine modern stations, aimed at improving mobility and reducing reliance on road transport. Officials believe the upgrades will ease urban congestion, cut travel time, and stimulate economic growth across central Albania.

A Step Toward European Integration

Infrastructure Minister Belinda Balluku emphasized the strategic importance of the railway initiative, describing it as a “cornerstone of Albania’s future transport vision.”

“This project strengthens our position as a regional transport hub and reflects our commitment to sustainability and European integration,” Balluku said.

With construction progressing on schedule, the project is expected to play a key role in transforming Albania’s domestic and international transport links — ushering in a new era of efficient, sustainable, and interconnected travel.
