Albania Eyes Formula 1 Debut in 2030 with Elbasan Automotor Park

Albania has unveiled its bold ambition to host a Formula 1 Grand Prix in 2030, tied to the completion of the Elbasan Automotor Park — a new, state-of-the-art racing complex currently under development.

Prime Minister Edi Rama announced that the final design phase of the project is now complete, created in collaboration with a team appointed by F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali.

“It’s a bold and once-unthinkable vision,” Rama said, emphasizing the potential to position Albania on the global motorsport map.

Why it matters

Hosting a Formula 1 race would be a game-changer for Albania — unlocking significant economic growth, boosting tourism, and elevating the country’s global visibility. The Elbasan Automotor Park isn’t just about racing; it’s designed as a multifunctional motorsport hub that aims to become a year-round destination.

Project overview

Construction began in 2023 and is scheduled to finish within three years. The 600,000 m² complex will feature:

  • A fully FIA-certified Formula 1 circuit
  • A karting track for kids and amateur racing
  • A road safety training center
  • Albania’s first Retro Car Museum
  • A newly planned waterfront promenade for cycling and leisure

According to government officials, the project is rooted in long-term economic strategy rather than short-term spectacle.

“This isn’t just about hosting a race — it’s about building a sustainable ecosystem around motorsport,” one official noted.

The global F1 effect

Formula 1 generates around €250 billion in global revenue annually, with over 300,000 fans attending each Grand Prix and more than 1 billion viewers tuning in worldwide.

“This would be a massive global spotlight on Albania,” said Arbjan Mazniku, Minister of State for Local Governance.

What’s next?

Rama confirmed that the government is committed to meeting the required FIA certifications, and believes Albania can deliver the infrastructure needed to host a Formula 1 race within the decade.

“Our goal is clear: to bring Formula 1 to Albania in 2030,” Rama said.

While the ambition is high, officials remain confident that the Elbasan Automotor Park can turn this vision into reality — putting Albania on the international racing calendar for the first time.
