Day 1 after the terrible bloody deed at the BORG DreierschĂĽtzengasse in Graz: During a search of the apartment of the perpetrator Artur A. (21), special police units also discovered a pipe bomb.
On Tuesday, the former BORG student killed eight students and two teachers with a legally purchased pistol and a shotgun – then A. shot himself in the school toilet.
Graz, Austria, indeed the whole of Europe, is deeply shocked that a young person is capable of such a cruel act: At 10 a.m., Artur A. stormed into the school in DreierschĂĽtzengasse. There, he fired shots mainly on the third floor, but then went directly to his former classroom, where he killed students he did not know personally. More than twelve students survived the shooting with serious injuries. A total of more than 40 shots were fired.
House search in the apartment of the serial killer
Shortly after the first special police units arrived, the perpetrator shot himself. However, during a house search yesterday, the police found evidence that Artur A. (21) had been planning this insane act for a long time: the AMS recipient had been working on a pipe bomb, but it was not yet functional.
In his suicide note, which police officers also found during the house search, the serial killer is believed to have stated his motives for the rampage – however, no further information is available at this time. Some media outlets speculate that Artur A. wanted to take “revenge for long-standing grievances.”
The German chancellor and the federal government have declared three days of national mourning.
