The long-awaited Vlora Airport is about to welcome its first aircraft — even though construction is still underway.
The landing is expected to take place within the next few days, according to Kosovo-based journalist Berat Buzhala, who cited anonymous sources.
While the purpose of the flight remains unclear, speculation is growing. Some suggest it may be a technical test flight, while others believe it could be politically motivated, timed to coincide with the Socialist Party’s electoral campaign.
“I’ve been told not to make too much noise about this,” Buzhala said, implying that the landing may be part of a larger, strategic rollout.
Infrastructure Symbolism or Campaign Optics?
The timing of the flight has raised eyebrows, as Albania has a history of showcasing incomplete infrastructure projects—including tunnels, roads, and public facilities—during election seasons, only to close them again until work is finalized.
Vlora Airport is officially scheduled to open in October 2025, and construction is ongoing. The airport features a 3.2-kilometre runway, designed to handle intercontinental flights, positioning it as a key asset in the region’s transport network.
Environmental Concerns and Controversy
The project has not been without backlash. Environmental groups have criticized the airport’s location in Akerni, within the protected Narta Lagoon, warning that it could severely disrupt local biodiversity.
In response to the controversy, Munich Airport recently withdrew its involvement from the project, citing concerns raised by environmental activists. Despite this, Albanian authorities have pushed forward with the development, highlighting its strategic importance for tourism and international connectivity.
A Milestone Amid Ongoing Debate
Whether the first landing marks the beginning of a new era in Albanian aviation — or simply a symbolic prelude to election season — remains to be seen. For now, all eyes are on Vlora as the runway prepares for its first official touchdown.
