More than 1,200 protests against the administration of US President Donald Trump and his advisor Elon Musk took place in the US on Saturday. Organisations in all 50 US states had called for protests.
Among other things, the demonstrators criticized the Trump administration’s actions against undocumented migrants, cuts to federal agencies and government programs, and customs policy. On posters, they demanded that Trump be removed from office.
In the capital, Washington, tens of thousands of demonstrators gathered in the National Mall (a park in Washington, D.C.) near the White House. Their posters read: “Not my president!” (a slogan coined by Hillary Clinton), “Stop destroying America”, “Hands off the rule of law” and “Hands off social security”.
In New York, thousands protested despite the drizzle. The demonstration stretched for almost 20 blocks on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan. There were also major protests in cities such as Atlanta, Boston, Miami, Chicago and Charlotte.
Various organizations had jointly called for more than 1,000 gatherings in all US states. The New York Times reported, citing the organizers, that more than 600,000 people had registered for the demonstrations in advance. Initially, given the large number of events, there was no reliable information on the number of participants.
Since taking office, Trump has begun to lay off federal employees on a large scale. He is also taking action against independent institutions and actors such as private universities and law firms. Democrats and experts view his course of action as a major threat to democracy and the rule of law. There were also demonstrations against Trump’s administration in European cities such as Berlin, London, Rome and Paris.
