A politically motivated double murder has shocked the US: Former House Speaker and prominent Democrat Melissa Hortman and her husband were shot dead in their home in Brooklyn Park in the early hours of the morning. This was confirmed by the state governor, Tim Walz.
“This was not a random act,” Walz said, visibly shaken. “We are treating this as a targeted, political act.” Almost simultaneously, another attack took place about 15 kilometers away in Champlin: Democratic Senator John Hoffman and his wife were attacked in their home and seriously injured. According to authorities, both are in critical condition in the hospital. Investigators also believe this incident was politically motivated.
Perpetrator on the run – police discover manifesto
The suspected perpetrator is still on the run. According to current information, the man had identified himself as a police officer before violently breaking into the politicians’ homes. When real police officers confronted him, he opened fire and managed to escape.
Investigators found a manifesto in a vehicle left behind during the escape, in which several Democratic officials from Minnesota were named and threatened. The authorities immediately initiated additional protective measures for those affected.
Politically motivated violence
The bloody deed shines a harsh light on the increasing political radicalization in the US. Governor Walz spoke of a “dark day for our democracy.” Security authorities are now working intensively to apprehend the perpetrator and prevent further attacks.
“Anyone who is politically active in this country should be able to do so without fear for their life,” Walz emphasized.
Melissa Hortman was one of the most influential Democratic voices in Minnesota for over two decades. From 2019 to early 2023, she served as Speaker of the State House. Party colleagues and friends reacted with shock to the news of her death. She was considered a champion of social justice, climate protection, and access to education.
