Raid on Zelensky’s former defense minister Resnikov!

For months, serious allegations have been circulating on social media platforms against Olexiy Resnikov, Ukraine’s former defense minister – until now, these allegations have been dismissed as fake news. However, today, Zelensky’s former confidant’s home was raided by the anti-corruption unit NABU.

Resnikov’s term in office since November 2021 has been repeatedly overshadowed by serious allegations of corruption. These included the purchase of winter uniforms at three times the market price and the mass delivery of food supplies to the troops at greatly inflated prices. Resnikov consistently rejected the allegations, calling them “disinformation.” Critics nevertheless see him as responsible for the scandals.

Dismissal

In September 2023, Resnikov was removed from office by President Volodymyr Zelensky and replaced by Rustem Umerov. This change was officially made with reference to the need for “new approaches” in the Ministry of Defense. However, the corruption allegations continued: not least because of the winter uniform deal and expensive catering, criminal investigations were launched against Resnikov and other officials.

Status of the investigation

This week, investigators once again searched Resnikov’s private residence. The aim of the measure was to secure evidence for the ongoing investigation. The exact address was not disclosed by the authorities. The background to this is a preliminary investigation into suspected negligent breach of trust and aiding and abetting corruption, triggered by unjustified service contracts and excessive procurement costs in the ministry.

Consequences

The ongoing house search makes it clear that the Ukrainian leadership – led by President Zelensky – wants to give significant weight to the fight against corruption in the military. Such a step is aimed at regaining trust in the West and the EU – especially in view of possible EU and NATO accession talks.

For Resnikov himself, the investigation means further damage to his image. If the suspicions are confirmed, he faces legal consequences, such as charges of embezzlement or corruption in office. The results of the investigation will also determine how successfully Ukraine can credibly communicate its reform efforts.
