Edi Rama is focusing on women in his election campaign: in Dibër, he celebrated growing support among female voters and called for the next “big political wave.”
As part of his nationwide election campaign tour, Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama visited the northeastern region of Dibër this week. There, he held a meeting specifically for women and girls from the region and took the opportunity to highlight the growing support for the Socialist Party of Albania (SP) among female voters.
According to a report by the public broadcaster Top Channel, Rama said that 56 percent of women and girls in Albania currently support the SP. In some regions, this figure is as high as 65 percent, while in Dibër it is currently around 40 percent. However, the head of government expressed confidence that this number would rise with targeted local efforts.
Women as a new force in local politics
Rama paid particular attention to the influence of women in political leadership roles. He referred to the mayors Festime Mjeshtri in Bulqiza and Valbona Kola in Klos. According to Top Channel, these two women have “transformed how we view local government” – an area that was previously often “automatically dominated by men.” Today, competence and vision count – and women are leading the way.
With a wink, Rama also explained:
“If we win the majority of young voters, we only need half the men. The rest can sit this one out.”
This statement, which was also documented by Euronews Albania, drew laughter – but at the same time carried a clear message: women are increasingly the backbone of Albania’s ruling party.
Target: 50 percent female party members
During the event, the prime minister also addressed the increased proportion of women within the SP itself. When the party was founded, only 15 percent of its members were female, but today the figure is already 40 percent, according to Rama. With a smile, he added that the next goal was “50.001 percent” – a symbolic figure intended to show that the party not only wants to achieve the quota for women, but to exceed it. These statements were also published by ata.gov.al, the government’s official news agency.
Women to make “greatest victory” possible
In closing, Rama called on his female supporters to continue on the path they had chosen: “Thanks to women like you, this will be our tenth and greatest victory – not only in Dibër, but throughout the country,” the prime minister said, according to Euronews Albania.
The event in Dibër was part of a larger mobilization campaign with which Rama aims to involve the population in rural regions more closely—especially the often underrepresented female electorate.
