Shortly after taking off from Rome, US Vice President JD Vance made clear what the US government expects from Moscow: “We want Russia to reintegrate itself into the world, but the killing must stop.”

The US Vice President said in his press statement on the steps of the government jet:

“There is a fundamental mistrust between Russia and the West. Trump thinks that’s stupid. He is willing to put old mistakes behind him. But it takes two to dance the tango.”

JD Vance then added: “Our offer to Russia is to reintegrate itself into the world, but to stop killing people. There is a fundamental mistrust between Russia and the West. Two things have already happened. First, the Russians and Ukrainians put peace offers on the table. Second, they agreed to direct talks. We haven’t seen anything like this in years.”

The vice president then says about Vladimir Putin: “I don’t think Putin knows how to get out of this. He has a million soldiers under arms. His economy is now producing drones and artillery instead of civilian goods.”

In Rome, US Vice President JD Vance was received in private audience by Pope Leo XIV at the conclusion of his visit. The head of the Catholic Church met with Vance at the Vatican, and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio was also present at the meeting. This was followed by a meeting between the US guests and Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher, the Vatican’s secretary for relations with states.

The Holy See reported that the current wars around the world were discussed. The parties involved in the conflicts are called upon to respect humanitarian and international law and to work toward negotiations.
